Company will concentrate on cardiovascular interventions, intracardiac echocardiography, software and AI while continuing to service its installed base
Siemens Healthineers has stopped selling general imaging ultrasound systems, including the Acuson Sequoia, Redwood, Juniper and Maple, as it narrows its ultrasound business to procedural imaging and image-guided therapy. The change took effect Oct. 12, the company announced from its ultrasound headquarters in Issaquah, Washington.
The company will continue to sell its procedural ultrasound systems, the Acuson Origin, P500 ICE and Freestyle, along with dedicated software and catheters. Those products are aimed mainly at electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists.
Existing general imaging customers will continue to receive service and support. Siemens Healthineers said it will honor all contractual and regulatory obligations and provide full life cycle support for its installed base, including maintenance, software updates and transducer availability. The company described general imaging ultrasound as a well-served market with solutions available from several established providers.
A bet on image-guided therapy
The shift reflects the company’s view that imaging is becoming an integral part of therapy itself, and that procedural imaging offers a significant opportunity for long-term growth.
“Medicine is evolving, and imaging is increasingly becoming part of therapy, not just diagnosis,” said Sourabh Pagaria, head of ultrasound at Siemens Healthineers.
Pagaria said concentrating the portfolio on procedural imaging will let the company apply its strengths in advanced cardiovascular imaging, intracardiac echocardiography (ICE), software, AI and partnerships with cardiovascular device companies to meet important clinical needs.
Siemens Healthineers plans to combine its Acuson Origin cardiovascular imaging platform, its ICE technology, its software and AI capabilities, and its device-company partnerships to support physicians performing increasingly complex cardiovascular interventions. The company says its portfolio, which ranges from 2D imaging to real-time 4D ICE, supports every stage of electrophysiology and structural heart procedures.
Siemens Healthineers describes itself as the pioneer of modern intracardiac echocardiography, with more than 25 years of development in the technology.
