Since entering the medical imaging leadership field five years ago, Omar Arafat, radiology manager at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center in Parma, Ohio has dedicated himself to motivating people and managing problems.

Traci Foster’s path to a medical imaging career wasn’t a direct one, but it’s ended up getting her exactly where she wanted to be. After completing an undergraduate degree in elementary education, Foster returned to her hometown of Rochester, Minnesota, to attend radiology school at the Mayo Clinic.

Andrew Sandstedt has always been an artist, but it took some time for him to take his talents into the professional sphere. As a teenager, he’d considered pursuing an arts degree after high school; his parents convinced him to get a business degree instead. When Sandstedt would see his classmates clutching their art portfolios on campus, he’d think, “Well, maybe someday,” and redirect his focus to his schoolwork. 

Benjamin credits his uncle with fostering his sense of curiosity and an interest in working with his hands, which led to a lifelong love of woodworking, a career as an Air Force mechanic, and provided the skill set that underpins his work in the radiology space as well.

When Jason Szmania first enrolled in a karate class, he was a middle-schooler whose parents wanted him and his brother to have something to keep them out of trouble until they were old enough for high school sports. Szmania enjoyed it well enough, but by the time football and wrestling came around, martial arts had fallen by the wayside.

Kernesha Weatherly is vice president of imaging at the New Orleans, Louisiana-headquartered Ochsner Health System, which spans 40 hospitals, 60 private care clinics, and even more freestanding centers throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

As the MRI department manager at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey, Mark Linderman has a number of responsibilities across all departmental operations, from imaging and scheduling to patient safety, payroll and staff training.
