Because of the importance to patient care and the potentially high costs of breakdowns, imaging systems are some of the few devices covered by service agreements these days.
Because it is recognized that the quality of the images is critical to proper diagnosis, mammography facilities, personnel and scanners are also regulated by a federal law passed almost 20 years ago, the Mammography Quality Standards Act (21 CFR Part 900).
The future of imaging engineers has changed quite a bit and will almost certainly continue to evolve.
I urge the CMS to reconsider their decision and allow AEM programs for all diagnostic imaging systems, so long as they require the use of data and risk assessments to develop them.
