Patient shielding (or unshielding) has recently been a topic among imaging experts amid technological advancements in the diagnostic imaging realm. Though most professional bodies are convinced that patient shielding could do more harm than to aid safety to patients and they have issued position statements for imaging facilities to follow in that area, the paradigm shift may not be quite simple. As it stands today, individual imaging departments do not seem to have entirely responded to this recent scientific development on patient safety. Moreover, patient population may not readily embrace this practical change and quite often the onus is placed on the imaging professionals to educate patients on the same. As much vital as it is to understand the science behind this complex mechanism, embracing the challenges in its implementation is also essential to adopt what is best for patient care and safety.
