Oklahoma City Indian Clinic Director of Radiology Lisa Walling, CRA, R.T.(R), found her career in radiology by accident – literally.
“Years ago, I was in a minor car accident,” Lisa explains. “During my visit, my doctor ordered some X-rays, and as I lay on the table, I had a light bulb moment – I knew this was what I was meant to do. That experience inspired me to apply to radiology school, and I’ve been passionate about this field ever since.”
Her moment of discovery on the X-ray table continues to ring true.
“I love making a meaningful difference in the lives of our Native American population. It’s been especially rewarding to introduce advanced technologies that enhance our screening exams and improve patient care,” she says when asked why she loves her job.
Lisa feels strongly about family and is a community-minded individual. Her personality traits were on display when she was asked about her greatest accomplishment.
“Personally, my greatest accomplishment is my family. I’ve been married to my amazing husband, Rusty, for 27 years. Together, we’ve raised two caring, adventurous and passionate children. I’m so proud of the people they’ve become,” Lisa shares. “Professionally, my greatest accomplishment is building strong, high-performing teams. I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible technologists, radiologists and support staff. Many of those relationships have lasted well beyond my time at each organization – something I deeply value.”
“I lead with a servant’s heart,” she adds. “I believe in developing teams where each individual feels empowered to grow. My goal is always to foster a culture of compassion, excellence and continuous improvement in how we serve our patients every day.”
Her success in radiology comes from hard work along with guidance from mentors.
“I was fortunate to have David Yoder as a mentor early in my leadership career – his guidance helped shape my foundation. Currently, I’m learning a great deal from Cindy Winter, AHRA’s president-elect, whose leadership and insight continue to inspire me. I’m also proud to mentor a team member who’s exploring a path into leadership – it’s rewarding to help others grow,” Lisa says.
Looking to the future, she encourages herself and others to accept opportunities and to push through challenges.
“Say yes – even when it feels uncomfortable. Growth happens outside your comfort zone. Some of my most rewarding experiences, both personally and professionally, have come from simply being willing to take that first step,” Lisa says.
Speaking of the future, what can radiology and imaging departments expect in the next 5 to 10 years?
“AI is the future of imaging. I believe we’re on the brink of a transformative era where technology will significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy, efficiency and the overall patient experience,” Lisa says.
Along with Rusty and two adult children, Lisa says her family includes “a full house of fur babies – five dogs and two cats – and we foster for the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Oklahoma, where we adopted two of our pups.”
